We recently hosted Ministry of Education officials from Nigeria as they visited schools participating in the BridgeIT program, which uses cell phones, video, and TVs to deliver educational programs to rural areas.

We Give Books book donations: Tanzania

Students in Tanzania benefiting from We Give Books book donations to the Tinga Tinga Tales Teacher Training Programme in East Africa.

Yatima Orphanage, Dar es Salaam

Yatima houses over 200 orphans in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. In this slideshow, the Pearson Foundation team brings food and art materials to the children. The Mama who runs Yatima works tirelessly to find enough money to feed the children every day. She also can't afford the school fees for everyone. But, look at the faces! Love these kids...

Ikaya Labantu, Crèche and Shelter, Langa, Cape Town

Through empowering 30 pre-school teachers with Early childhood development skills and equipping them with Tinga Tinga Tales books and 3-in-1 resource kits, the Ikaya Labantu, Crèche is making a significant difference in the lives of the children, the teachers of surrounding care centres and the Langa community.

Tinga Tinga Tales ECD Programme

The Tinga Tinga Tales Early Childhood Development Teacher Training Programme launched in Kenya this week. Part of the Pearson Teacher Education Programm in East Africa, the program provides early childhood educators with the skills to improve the lives of young people they work with every day. Each teacher in the program will receive a classroom set of Tinga Tinga Tales books, as well as the skills to train other teachers who will also receive books. 

Professional Development Programme

Beginning in 2008, the Pearson Foundation has been working with local Longman offices in Nigeria, Tanzania, Kenya, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, and South Africa presenting teacher training and student digital arts programs. Over 1,000 teachers and 1,000 students have participated in these workshops for Early Childhood Development, Literacy and Numeracy at the Primary level, and digital arts workshops.

Digital Arts program in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa

The students participate in an innovative workshop in which they learn to script, develop, and create curriculum-based films. Using a mobile lab that includes Nokia phones, laptops, and editing software, Pearson Foundation staff then help participants create films based on a selected curriculum and standards-based subject that will ultimately be used to educating others.  Sponsored by NEA/Pearson Foundation/Nokia/Caversham Press
